In 1904 Richard Hornsby & Sons from Lincolnshire developed a steel plate-tracked vehicle that was capable of being steered via differential braking instead of using a tiller or steering wheel. After selling several tractors for use in the Yukon but facing a limited market for them at home, they sold their patent to Holt Manufacturing Company in 1911 who went on to further develop this technology into other models and applications used today around the world.
Charles Clements, a photographer for the Holt Manufacturing Company, was credited with coining the name "Caterpillar" when he commented that the track of their carrier rollers resembled a caterpillar. His metaphor resonated with Benjamin Holt who seized on it and subsequently used it to market the company's products. However, some sources have attributed this name to British soldiers who had witnessed trials of the Hornsby tractor in July 1907.
In 1925, Holt Manufacturing Company and C. L. Best Tractor Company merged to create Caterpillar Tractor Company. This combined their track-type tractors from Holt and the gasoline-powered tractors of Best into one company under a single brand name: "Caterpillar".
